 The Pennsylvania state Department of Agriculture has reinstated the raw milk license Hendricks Farms and Dairy after tests found no trace of the bacteria that has sickened at least 10 people in recent weeks.

The world’s soils continue to be degraded at an unprecedented rate that will only exacerbate the current food crisis, scientists are warning.

 

The current surge in food prices has been blamed on factors such as the diversion of food crops into biofuels production, coupled with poor harvests caused by droughts, floods and pests. But the situation was a long time in coming, experts say, with unexpectedly poor harvests stressing an already weakened food production system. Read more

Growth Hormone Does Not Boost Athletic Performance, Says Medical Report

Taking human growth hormone does not boost athletic performance but does lead to negative health effects, according to a study conducted by researchers from Stanford University and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

 

Researchers reviewed the results of 27 prior studies on a total of 303 people between the ages of 13 and 45. They found that while taking artificial growth hormone did lead to a change in body composition, namely an increase in lean body mass, this change did not lead to increased strength or endurance. A California appeals court has ruled that homeschooling of children is illegal unless their parents have teaching credentials from the state.

 

"California is now on the path to being the only state to deny the vast majority of homeschooling parents their fundamental right to teach their own children at home," said Michael Smith, president of the Home School Legal Defense Association. Read more

Italy Bans Pesticides Linked to Bee Devastation

Neonicotinoids now suspended in four European countries.

 

The Italian government banned the use of several neonicotinoid pesticides that are blamed for the deaths of millions of honeybees. The Ministero del Lavoro della Salute e delle Politiche Sociali issued an immediate suspension of the seed treatment products clothianidin, imidacloprid, fipronil and thiamethoxam used in rapeseed oil, sunflowers and sweetcorn. The Italian government will start a monitoring program to further investigate the reasons of recent bee deaths. Read more
